  • 4 large Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (Gruyère, cheddar, or mozzarella)
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup heavy cream or whole milk
  • ½ cup beef broth or vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme (or 1 teaspoon fresh thyme)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • Extra Parmesan cheese
  • Crispy fried onions (optional)

Instructions

  1. Sauté sliced onions in butter and olive oil until golden brown (20-25 minutes).
  2. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking dish with butter.
  3. Layer half of the potato slices followed by half the onions, garlic powder, thyme, and some cheese. Repeat layers.
  4. Mix cream with salt, pepper, and thyme; pour over layered ingredients.
  5. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil, add extra cheese on top, and bake for another 15-20 minutes until golden.
  6. Let cool slightly before serving.
