  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring (gel or liquid)
  • 8 oz softened cream cheese for frosting
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter for filling
  • 1 cup brown sugar for filling
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon for filling

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm milk and water. Sprinkle yeast and let sit for 5 minutes until bubbly.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Add this mixture to the yeast along with softened butter, eggs, red food coloring, and vanilla extract. Mix until combined.
  3. Knead dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in an oiled bowl covered with a damp cloth and let rise for about an hour.
  4. Prepare filling by mixing softened butter with brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  5. Roll out the dough into a rectangle on a floured surface. Spread filling evenly and roll tightly. Slice into individual rolls.
  6. Place rolls in a greased baking dish and cover again to rise for another 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for about 25 minutes until golden brown.
  8. While baking, make frosting by mixing softened cream cheese with butter until smooth; add powdered sugar and vanilla.
  9. Allow rolls to cool slightly before frosting generously.
